Girls Aloud
The UK girls group Girls Aloud is comprised of the following five singers: Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts, Kimberley Walsh, Nadine Coyle, and Cheryl Tweedy. The group was formed in 2002 as the result of a TV reality show in the UK called Popstars: The Rivals. The show's premise was to bring together two singing groups, one of all girls and the other all guys. The members of the groups were chosen from thousands of contestants, much in the way American Idol contestants are chosen in the US. Once the groups were assembled they were to compete to see which would win the title of Popstars of the Year, the boys or the girls. The final ensemble of girls called themselves Girls Aloud and the final group of guys called their group One True Voice. Initially many thought the guy group would come out one top, but they subsequently released only two songs and then disbanded. The girls won the show and then continued on to produce many more CD's and singles that soon went to number one on the UK charts. Their first single Sound of the Underground was at number one for four consecutive weeks. Their second single No Good Advice also went on to be a number one release. Their first full CD Sound of the Underground, named for their hit single, came out in 2003. It quickly went to the number two spot. Their cover of the song Jump by the Pointer Sisters was on the sound track for the hit film Love Actually. Their second and third CD's What Will the Neighbors Say? and Chemistry both went to number one as well. In addition to their songs being a huge hit with fans, the critics also have given them great reviews. Many were surprised by this as it usually does not happen for groups formed from reality TV. The group continues to record together and started touring as of 2005 as a result of high sales of their records. Hopefully the girls will be coming to a stage near your home soon. Tidbits
