Biography

Avril Ramona Lavigne was born September 27, 1984 in Belleville, Ontario. Both of her parents are Franco-Ontarian. She had a Roman Catholic upbringing and sang in her church coir. She taught herself to play guitar. She was discovered by Cliff Fabri at a bookstore in Kingston, Ontario.

When she was sixteen she was signed by Arista Records. She moved to L.A. to have her CD co-written with Cliff Magness and the songwriting team The Matrix, which has also worked with Sheena Easton and Christina Aguilera. It was released by Arista on June 4, 2002, in the United States, reaching number two there and number one in Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom (at the time she was the youngest female soloist to have a number-one album in the UK). It was certified four times platinum less than six months later and sold 14 million copies worldwide as of December 2004.

She was named "Best New Artist" in 2002 at the MTV Video Music Awards, and was nominated for eight Grammy Awards. Her second album, Under My Skin, was released in 2004. It debuted at number on in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan and many other countries. She co-wrote most of the CD with a Canadian singer-songwriter named Chantal Kreviazuk.

Avril has recently changed her image from teen grunge to adult chic. She became the new face of Chanel in 2006 and signed a contract with Ford Modeling Agency. She appeared on the cover of Harper's Bazaar, displaying her new look, in February of 2006. In 2006 she was included in World's Most Beautiful People by People Magazine.
