Shania Twain
Eilleen Twain was born August 28, 1965 in Windsor, Ontario. Her mother's second husband, Jerry Twain, adopted Eilleen and her name became Twain. He was a full-blooded member of the Ojibwa First Nation Indian tribe. At the age of twenty-two her mother and adoptive father died in a tragic care accident. Eilleen took the responsibility of raising her two younger brothers and younger sister. She moved the family to Huntsville, Ontario and supported them singing at the Deerhurst resort. She was spotted by entertainment lawyer, Dick Frank who was from Nashville, Tennessee. He helped her to record a demo tape. In 1991, she signed her first recording contract with Mercury Nashville Records and she changed her name to Shania, a Ojibwa word meaning "I'm on my way." She felt that her heart was very close to the Ojibwa tribe because of the love of their heritage she had learned from her step-father. In 1993 her debut CD Shania Twain, was released to poor sales and reviews. She then collaborated with Robert Lange, a famous rock producer, to produce and co-write the songs for her second CD. The two later wed in 1993 after their working relationship turned romantic. Her music took on a decidedly pop western tone and her second CD The Woman In Me went on to climb the billboard charts. She also won a Grammy Award for the CD. In 1997 her third CD, Come On Over sold 172,000 copies on the first day. Several singles from the CD went to number one. After all the singles were released from the CD it had sold in excess of twenty million copies in the United States alone. At the time it broke records for being the longest CD in the top twenty of Billboards hits. It stayed in the top twenty for over one year. In 1999 she was named Entertainer of The Year by the Academy of Country Music and also by the Country Music Association. Her next album Up! was released in 2002, it debuted at number one, selling 874,000 in the first week alone. It charted at the top for five weeks. The single Forever and for Always was released as a single in 2003 and went to number four on country charts. It has since sold over five million copies in the United States. In 2004, she released the Greatest Hits album, with four new tracks. Tidbits
