Biography

Zooey Claire Deschanel was born on January 17, 1980 in Los Angeles, California. Her father is an award winning, and an Academy Award nominated cinematographer and her mother an actress. She has one sister, who is also an actress. She is of Irish decent with a little bit of French thrown in. She studied at the Crossroads School of Arts and Sciences and also attended the well known and highly respected French Woods Festival of Performing Arts camp in New York when she was in her teens. Later she also attended Northwestern University, but left early to pursue an acting and singing career.

Her first acting gig came with the popular TV sitcom Veronica's Closet in 1997. From there she went on to her big screen debut in Mumford in 1999. This role was what prompted her to leave University to pursue her career which steadily grew from 1999 on. Following Mumford she appeared in Almost Famous, which garnered her much praise from critics and gave her more exposure to audiences. She went on to roles in the following movies: The Good Girl, Big Trouble, The New Guy, Abandon, and All the Real Girls. This last part got her a nod from the Mar del Plata Film Festival who voted her Best Actress that year. She also received a nomination for an Independent Spirit Award for her acting in that film. Her next wide exposure role came the following year, 2004, with the big hit holiday film Elf. She played Jovie, a department store elf, who is a bit cynical but later becomes smitten with the light-hearted lead character Buddy, played by Will Farrell. She was able to show off her singing talents in Elf and was praised for her ability in this arena as she was for her acting in the film.

She has appeared in over ten more movies following Elf including: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, a movie based on the best selling novel by the same name, Once Upon a Mattress, a made for TV Disney movie, Live Free or Die, Failure to Launch, Surf's Up, and as Janis Joplin in The Gospel According to Janis.
