Rihanna
Robyn Rihanna Fenty was born February 20, 1988 in the parish of St. Michael on the Caribbean island of Barbados. She is the oldest of three children. Her father is Barbadian and her mother Guyanese. In her early years she went to Charles F. Broome Memorial School and later to the prestigious Combermere School. While in secondary school she formed her first band, a musical trio with tow of her classmates. She also entered and won the Miss Combermere Pageant in 2004. Her first love and greatest talent, however, is singing. At age fifteen she got her first chance for recognition and professional status. She was introduced to music producer Evan Rogers while he was on vacation in Barbados with his wife, a native of the island, Jackie. Rogers and his partner Carl Sturken had Rihanna record a demo in the United States and it was subsequently sent to several recording companies, including Def Jam Records. She later auditioned for CEO of Def Jam, Jay-Z and he signed her to a record deal on the spot; she was sixteen at the time. Since then she has released two CD's. Her debut album was entitled Music of the Sun, and came out in 2005, her second, A Girl Like Me, was released in 2006. Her single Pon de Replay went to number two on the Billboard 100. Music of the Sun later went Gold in the US. She has been nominated for three different Best New Artist awards and won the title of Best International Artist from Much Music in 2006. Her music has a definitive Caribbean flair and she has said that her hope is to bring a taste of the Islands to her fans. She has, so far, had great success with her singing career at such an early age and many predict that her star will continue to rise in the future.
