Pussycat Dolls
The Pussycat Dolls are an all female Rhythm and Blues group which originated as a burlesque dance troupe. The group was founded in 1995 by Robin Antin, a renowned choreographer who has worked with many singers and musical groups including, Pink, No Doubt and Christina Aguilera, to name a few. Carmen Electra was, during this time, the lead performer for the group, but due to other commitments, had to later limit her participation. The troupe was supposedly formed "for fun" and many female celebrities wanted to get in on the action. During their stint as a burlesque act they performed with many guest singers including: Britney Spears, Brittany Murphy, Christina Aguilera, Christina Applegate, Eva Longoria, Gwen Stefani, Jessica Simpson, Kelly Osbourne, Pink, and many others. In early 2003 the PD's were re-designed as a singing group, dropping the "troupe" tag; they were signed to Interscope Records and all new members came on board via an open casting call. The current Pussycat dolls include: Nicole Scherzinger, Carmit Bachar, Jessica Sutta, Melody Thornton, Kimberly Wyatt and Ashley Roberts. This band of women released the Pussycat Dolls first album, entitled PCD in 2005. PCD debuted at number five on Billboard. Several high selling singles came from their debut album, including, Don't Cha, Stickwitu, Beep and Buttons. Some of the singles featured vocals from various guest artists including, Busta Rhymes, Black Eyed Peas and Snoop Dogg. They have been well received in the United Kingdom, beating out Destiny's Child and the Spice Girls in MTV's UK List of Top Ten Female Groups in 2006. The Pussycat Dolls, and Interscope Records, have drawn fire from parenting groups. Their merchandising deal to produce a line of dolls in the groups' likeness with Hasbro seriously irritated CCFC and DAD's. The dolls were to be pushed to nine year olds; however, the parenting groups' protested the deal and successfully campaigned to put a stop to it, stating that the PD's overly-sexualized image was not appropriate for kids. Duh, one would think that Hasbro and Robin Antin could have figured this no-brainer out on their own. There is something to be said for not wearing your garter belt too tightly, it seems to cut off the oxygen flow to the brain. Much to the delight of men everywhere, the world is sure to be seeing more of the Pussycat Dolls in coming years, if that is at all possible. Tidbits
