Lucy Liu
Lucy Alexis Liu was born December 2, 1968 in Queens, New York. Her Chinese immigrant parents are both business professionals. She graduated from Stuyvesant High School in 1986 and enrolled at NYU. Not thrilled with the environment at NYU she transferred to the University of Michigan at the start of her sophomore year. She graduated from UM with a degree in Chinese Language and Culture. During her senior year, Liu auditioned for a small part in a production of Alice in Wonderland and earned the lead role instead. Always having an interest in acting she ran with it and devoted her self to becoming a professional actress. She moved to Los Angeles and worked as a waitress while auditioning. Her first professional role was a guest appearance on Beverly Hills, 90210 in 1990. That role led to more TV spots on such shows as NYPD Blue, ER, and the X Files. In 1996, she was cast as an ambitious college student on Rhea Perlman's brief sitcom Pearl in 1996. Her first major motion picture was in the hit movie Jerry Maguire in 1996 as Jerry's ex-girlfriend. Several small roles followed until she got her big break in 1997 on the hit TV series Ally McBeal. Liu initially auditioned for the role of Nelle Porter, which went to Portia de Rossi, but David E. Kelley was so interested in her abilities that he promised to write a part for her in an upcoming episode. The part was of a growling, ill-tempered, fill-in attorney named Ling Woo. Lucy did such a wonderful job with the part that she was promptly signed as a regular cast member. She returned to the big screen in 1999 when she was cast as a dominatrix in the Mel Gibson action flick Payback, and as a hitchhiker in Play It to the Bone. The year 2000 turned out to be even better for Lucy when she was cast as the kidnapped Princess Pei Pei in Jackie Chan's western Shanghai Noon, then as one of Charlie's Angels with Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz. In 2001 she landed a large role in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill starring Uma Thurman. She also appeared in Kill Bill II in 2003. She lives a very active life and practices the martial art of Kali-Eskrima-Silat; she also skis, rock climbs and rides horses. Tidbits
