Martina Hingis
Martina was born on September 30, 1980 in Košice, Czechoslovakia. Her home country is now known as Slovakia. Both her parents were professional tennis players. Martina started playing tennis as soon as she could toddle. Under the tutelage of her parents she quickly began to enjoy the sport and showed great talent for it. She was entered in her first tennis tournament at the young age of four. By the time she was twelve, in 1993, she became the youngest to win the Grand Slam Jr. Title. She was soon getting the attention of the tennis world. She went professional when she was only fourteen in the Australian Open. She again became the youngest player to win to win a match at a Grand Slam singles match there. She soon developed a playful and artistic playing style that won her the love of fans and judges worldwide. Since then she has won many tournaments including, the woman's doubles in Wimbledon and the singles at the Australian Open. She was only 16 when she won at the Australian Open making her again the youngest player to win the match. In 1999 she won the Australian singles trophy with doubles partner Anna Kournikova. She suffered an ankle injury which forced her to take a break from tennis for a while. She returned in 2002 to win the Australian doubles tournament, again with Anna Kournikova as her partner. In her long and illustrious career she has won an amazing amount of singles matches and an equally stunning amount of doubles matches. After an upsetting loss she announced that she planned on retiring from tennis completely. But she could not stay away from her sport and returned again in late 2002 and again in 2006. Tidbits
