Biography

Charlize Theron (pronounced thrown) was born August 7th, 1975 in Benoni, South Africa. Her father was a construction company owner of French descent and her mother is of German descent. Her mother took over her husband's business after his death. She was an only child and grew up on her parents' Johannesburg farm in her younger years. She was sent to boarding school when she was thirteen. Her father was a violent alcoholic and during a physical attack, her mother, Gerda, shot him in self-defense. Charlize was fifteen at the time and witnessed her father's shooting and death. No charges were pressed against her mother. At sixteen she left home to travel to Milan, Italy after she was signed for a one-year modeling contract.

The end of her contract took her to New York City. She stayed in the City and attended ballet school. She became part of a dance troop until a bad knee injury caused her to leave dancing. With only a few dollars in her pocket she bought a ticket to L.A. to pursue an acting career. Her first role was in a disappointing video release of Children of The Corn III. She followed this with Two Days In the Valley and Trial and Error. In 1997 she got her first real break with Devil's Advocate with Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino. The movie was a success at the box-office, and with movie fans as well. It put Charlize on the map. Other highly successful movies included, Mighty Joe Young, Cider House Rules, Sweet November, and The Italian Job. She received good reviews for all of these films. She established herself as an actress of high caliber, however, for her performance in the movie Monster. Her portrayal of a serial-killer won her a best actress Oscar, a Golden Globe and a SAG award in 2004.

She has been living with her long time boyfriend, and former co-star, Stuart Townsend who she has been dating since 2004. The couple says they will not marry until gay couples are aloud to marry legally. Considering her difficult times, she has come a long way in her life, or perhaps it is because of those difficulties that she is such an excellent and believable actress.
