Madonna
Madonna Louise Ciccone was born August 16, 1958 in Bay City, Michigan. Her mother died of breast cancer when she was five years old. She is the third child in a large family of six children. Her two younger siblings were born to her father and his second wife, whom he married after the mother's death. While all her siblings had to take music lessons, Madonna begged her father to let her take ballet instead, which she excelled at. She went on to take other dance classes and her training paid off; she used it well in her later years as an entertainer and singer. Upon graduating high school, she attended the University of Michigan to which she won a dance scholarship. She left before her third year to move to New York City in order to pursue a career in dance. Her trait of tenacity was present even at this early age. With only thirty-five dollars in her pocket she took a plane from Michigan to NYC and set about the business of trying to make a name for herself as a dancer. Having never been on her own and having to adjust to many firsts in her life, she struggled for some time as she tried to get her footing. She has often said it was the bravest thing she has done in her life. She worked many menial jobs, along with dancing for several dance companies, in order to survive in the City. She also took a job singing for a Rock band called The Breakfast Club for a short time. Deciding that she enjoyed singing and finding that she could combine her dancing talents with her voice talent she decided to pursue a singing career. She created a demo of mostly dance tracks and peddled them around the NYC disco and dance clubs to DJ's. She finally got interest from Mark Kamins, a D.J. and record producer, and he, in turn took the demo to Sire Records. In 1982 Sire records signed her to a deal that paid her $5000.00 per song. Her singles Everybody and Burning Up were hits on the dance charts but did not register on the Billboard scale. However, her first full vinyl entitled Madonna went to number eight on Billboard and got her the attention of various music professionals and fans alike. This album has since gone platinum four times over. From there her career literally skyrocketed. MTV had just begun to air with their music video station and it was the perfect medium for her to display her ability to entertain. Madonna fever took the nation by storm and thousands of teen and tweens sought to emulate her. Around this time she also garnered much criticism for her blatant sexuality from parents and conservative groups. Never-the-less, her music continued to sell well into the millions; she subsequently released a plethora of other records and CD's. All of them made it to the top ten in the US, many made it to number one. Madonna is almost as well known for her personal and sexual antics as she is for her abundance of top selling records. She has caused controversy for over twenty years. From creating a coffee table book called Sex, to kissing Brittney Spears and Christina Aguilera on stage, she consistently gives the media and fans something to talk about. Like Marilyn Monroe before her, Madonna's quality of being incredibly mysterious yet profoundly revealing has made her a paradoxical public figure that continues to fascinate and perplex the world at large.
