Biography

Christina Maria Aguilera was born December 18, 1980 in Staten Island, New York. She grew up in Wexford, Pennsylvania. She also lived in Texas and Japan. She grew up in a military family; her father was a US Army sergeant. He is Ecuadorian. Her mother is German, Irish and Dutch. Her parents divorced when she was six years old. Her father was abusive and controlling while she was growing up. Her mother moved Christina and her sister to her parents' home in Wexford and thus she grew up there. Her grandmother noticed her singing talent and encouraged her to pursue it. She was a fan of soul and blues singers such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Etta James as a young woman. After performing for local competitions she soon gained mild media attention and became known as "the little girl with the big voice" which caused much grief for her and her family from jealous school mates.

In 1990 she competed on Star Search, and like slews of others who later went on to super-stardom, she lost the competition; later that year she sang on KDKA-TV's Wake Up show and blew the audience away with her rendition of Vision of Love. She was only ten years old but she was able to hit every note in the song perfectly. Her first break came in 1993 when she landed a role on The New Mickey Mouse Club. She performed with an eclectic band of Mousketeers, most of which went on to stardom in later years, including Britney Spears, Justin Timerlake, JC Chasex, Rhona Bennett, and Keri Russell. The show ended in 1994. She created a demo at that time and began trying to get a singing contract.

In 1998 she was selected to sing the song Reflection for the animated Disney movie Mulan. It was nominated for a Golden Globe and she was signed to a recording contract promptly after with RCA. Her first full CD, Christina Aguilera was released in 1999. It reached the top of Billboards charts and sold eight million copies. While several of the songs went on to do extremely well, Christina was dissatisfied with the CD. She felt that it did not showcase her voice or style appropriately. She accused RCA of trying to turn her into a "bubblegum" artist, when she clearly had more vocal substance to offer. Her then manager refused to allow her creative freedom so she took legal measures to nullify their contract in 2000. She hired Irving Azoff as her new manager and set about recording a CD that she had more control over and which displayed her singing talents to their full range. In 2002 she released Stripped, which was closer to her R & B and blues roots. The CD ended up selling four million copies and went to number one in many countries. Her tour to promote the CD became one of the highest selling tours of 2003.

Between her extensive vocal range, vocal power and ability to take the matters of her career in her own hands, Christina is sure to become the next icon in the line of female American singers and entertainers.
