Amy Lee
Amy Lynn Lee was born on December 13, 1981 in Riverside, California. Her father was a Disc Jockey and her mother a stay at home mom. She has one brother and two sisters. Her family moved frequently when she was younger but finally set roots in Little Rock, Arkansas. Lee took classical piano lessons during most of her childhood and became an accomplished pianist during that time. She went to school at Pulaski Academy and graduated from there in 2000. She later attended Middle Tennessee State University, but left to pursue her musical career. The young piano player and lead singer formed the band Evanescence with Ben Moody, whom she met while at youth camp in her teens. They discovered that they had a love of many of the same musicians and musical styles. The pair soon started writing songs together and began performing in book stores and other small venues around Arkansas. Their music was soon in very high demand and they recorded their first full demo album Origin in 2000 under the Big-Wig Enterprises Label. The album is not very well known and began fetching a very high price on the black market after they became popular with larger audiences. While many fans consider this their first album, Lee contends that Fallen was their first real studio effort. Fallen was released in 2003 by Wind-Up Records and contains many of the tracks released on their demo, it subsequently went six times Platinum by 2004. It sold 2.61 million copies that year in the United States alone. The band since has released Anywhere But Home in 2004 and The Open Door in 2006. In 2004 the band won the Best New Artist Grammy as well as a Best Hard Rock Performance Grammy. The band had several names picked out before finally settling on Evanescence; according to Answers.com Evanescence means "The act or state of vanishing away; disappearance; as, the evanescence of vapor, of a dream, of earthly plans or hopes" a meaning that Lee felt represented an image of her band that she wanted others to envision. Lee is well known for her neo-goth dress and make-up style and is admired for refraining from using blatant sexuality to sell albums or get attention for her work. During the band's European tour of 2004 co-founder Ben Moody abruptly left the tour claiming "artistic differences" but later admitted to combating bi-polar disorder and a drug habit. He was replaced with Terry Balsamo formally from the band Cold. The outspoken and talented Amy Lee has been noted as a musician to watch in the coming years. Tidbits
