Biography

Uma Karuna Thurman was born on April 29, 1970 in Boston, Massachusetts. Her father is Robert Thurman, a professor of Tibetan Buddhist studies at Columbia University. Her mother, Nena Von Schlebrugg, was married to the philosopher and famous professor Timothy Leary for a short time before marrying Uma's father. She has three siblings, all brothers. She was raised with Buddhist philosophies as were her brothers. She and her family often spent time in India as her father was close friends with the Dali Lami. She also moved frequently due to her father's position as a professor. She was often taunted by her peers for her awkward and gangly frame growing up. However, she more than overcame her awkwardness to become one of the most graceful women in film.

She showed an early talent for acting, and after performing in a local performance of The Crucible talent scouts who were present at the play convinced her to try her hand at a professional acting career. She left Mount Hermon Prep School to move to New York City to pursue acting. She also attended the Professional Children's School, but left early to model. She broke into acting in 1988 with four separate film releases that year. Johnny Be Good, Kiss Daddy Goodnight, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and her most successful film of that year, Dangerous Liaisons. Liaisons was a critical and box-office success and bought Uma to the attention of film critics and fans. She had a short topless scene that was over sensationalized in the media. Being uncomfortable with the attention she left the States to hide out in London for nearly a year.

Upon her return she stared in several films some were given great reviews and others which were flops. The worst of these, at that time, was Even Cowgirls Get The Blues which was released in 1993. Her career languished for a short time and then she was cast in the cult classic, and high grossing, Pulp Fiction by Quentin Tarantino. Tarantino did not want to hire her for the role of Mia, but after having dinner with her she won him over completely and she later became his proclaimed muse. Uma was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in the film. She made several other films that were mild critical successes until she once again paired up with Tarantino. The films Kill Bill and Kill Bill II were huge hits both with critics and fans. It won huge at the box office and established Uma as a high caliber star.

On the personal front, she married actor Gary Oldman in 1990 and the couple divorced in 1992. In May of 1998 she married Ethan Hawke, actor and author; however, even though the couple had two children together and seemed well suited they split in 2003 and divorced in 2004. Their break-up was well published in the media.
