Biography

Sarah Michelle Gellar was born on April 14, 1977 in New York City. She is the only child of Jewish American parents Arthur Gellar and Rosellen. At the age of four she was spotted by an agent in a restaurant in Uptown Manhattan. Three weeks later she was on the set of her first film, An Invasion of Privacy. She later attended one of New York's top schools, Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School, where she was bullied constantly. She left Columbia to attend the Professional Children's School, which was also attended by Tara Reid and Macaulay Culkin. She had a straight A school average and became a competent figure skater. Her best friend growing up was Melissa Joan Hart, who later was the star of the series Clarissa Explains It All and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch.

She has acted in over one-hundred TV commercials and was a Wilhelmina Model. On February 24th 1993, she began work on the set of All My Children. She was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in 1994 and, although she lost, she was nominated again in 1995 and won in the Younger Leading Actress category. Although she had given the producers six months notice of her decision to leave the show, she made her decision public the day after she won her Emmy. She then moved to California to seek roles in film or TV.

In 1996, Sarah was picked as the lead of a new series called Buffy the Vampire Slayer based on the movie by the same name. It was one of the WB's most watched TV shows in years and prompted the popular spin-off Angel. Between filming Buffy, she also shot one of the most popular horror movies of the 1990's. In 1997, Sarah finished shooting I Know What You Did Last Summer which stars her and Jennifer Love Hewitt as teens who try to cover up a hit and run. It later became number one and earned a profit in just two days. She next took a break from the horror genre to film Cruel Intentions, Simply Irresistible and Harvard Man. In 2002 she filmed the popular Scooby Doo movie based on the hit TV cartoon of the same name; she met her future husband on the set. She has continued to make movies and married her long time boyfriend and her Scooby Doo co-star, Freddie Prinze Jr. in 2002.
