Tia Carrere
Althea Rae Duninio Janairo was born on January 2, 1967 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her heritage is Filipino, Chinese and Spanish. Her first venture into entertainment was on Star Search at the age of seventeen, although she did not win, as it is with many successful actresses and actors, she did go on to have a substantial career in Hollywood. Her first film debut was in a low-budget horror film called Zombie Nightmare. This minor success prompted her to leave Hawaii and try California. She moved to Los Angeles in 1985 and landed her first role in a few short months. She auditioned for and won a part on General Hospital and worked on the TV soap opera from 1985 to 1987. Her big screen debut came in 1991 when she appeared in Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man. Her most famous role came in 1992, however, when she played Cassandra, the lead characters love interest, in Wayne's World. The movie was such a success at the box office that it prompted the making of a sequel, Wayne's World Two. Tia also appeared as Cassandra in the second film. She did all of her own singing in the film and the soundtrack includes tracks sung exclusively by her. She later appeared in several popular movies including: True Lies, The Immortals, High School High, Jury Duty, Lilo & Stich (the voice of Nani), and Saints Row. She has also done extensive modeling and singing and released a solo album in 1993 called Dream. Although not hugely popular in the United States the album went platinum in the Philippines. In 1992 she married Elie Samaha; the couple divorced in 2000. She was remarried in 2002 to Simon Wakelin, a photojournalist and the pair had a daughter together in 2004. Tidbits
