Gwyneth Paltrow
Gwyneth Katherine Paltrow was born on September 28th, 1972 in Los Angeles, California. Her father, Bruce Paltrow, was a television and film director and producer of award winning shows, such as St. Elsewhere; her father died in 2002. Her mother is the Tony Award and Golden Globe winning actress, Blythe Danner who has appeared in numerous stage plays and such films as Brighton Beach Memoirs, The Prince of Tides and Meet the Parents. Gwyneth's father was Jewish and came from a long line of respected rabbis. Her mother was raised Quaker. She has one brother named Jake. She was raised in Santa Monica, California and attended the all girls Spence School in NYC. She later studied Art History at the University of California in Santa Barbara. She left University to pursue an acting career. Her film debuts came with two films in 1991. The first was a film called Shout and the second was the film Hook starring Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman. She had roles in five more films before landing a part in the major box-office hit, Seven starring Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt in 1995. The film got her noticed as did her off screen romance with Brad Pitt whose career was beginning to take off at that time. Seven was followed with Moonlight and Valentino, Hard Eight and The Pallbearer. Her breakout role came in 1996 with the classic comedy Emma. She had the lead role of Emma Woodhouse in the film adaptation of the Jane Austin novel of the same name. The role garnered her much praise and a great deal of attention as well. It subsequently led to her being cast as Estella in the 1998 film version of the Dickens novel Great Expectations and later as Viola De Lesseps in the Academy Award winning Shakespeare in Love. She won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her part in that film. She has gone on to roles in many films including: The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Intern, Bounce, The Royal Tenenbaums, Shallow Hal, Proof, Running With Scissors, Infamous, The Good Night and Dirty Tricks. On the personal front she ended her relationship with Brad Pitt in 1997. She later had a close friendship with her Bounce co-star Ben Affleck that was presumed to be a romance, however she denied this rumor. In December of 2004 she married her then boyfriend, musician Chris Martin of the band Coldplay. The couple have since had two children together; Apple born in May of 2004 and Moses, born in April of 2006. In 2005 she had announced to the media that she was suffering from depression from the death of her father, to whom she was very close.
