While she was still an infant her family moved to Puerto Rico for a little over a year, and then to London, in Crouch End. When she was eleven years old her family left London and moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan. She attended Fountain Elementary School and later City High School. City High was an institution for gifted children. She graduated from high school in 1986. She was a rebellious teen and often dyed her hair various colors and had her nose pierced. Her original goals included a degree in Maine Biology, but she caught the acting urge after appearing in several high school and community stage productions. She later attended Goodman Theater School of Drama at DePaul University in Chicago. She graduated in 1990 with a Bachelor Degree in Fine Arts. When she was twenty-two she moved to New York and worked as a waitress while she acted in several stage plays. She won a 1990 Theatre World Award for her part in Absent Friends run by the Manhattan Theatre Club. She moved to LA in 1992 and auditioned for several parts swearing to never act in Television. She changed her mind after a year of auditioning without any luck. She made a guest appearance on the Fox series Class of '96 which led to her being sent the script for the X-Files. Chris Carter wanted to give her the role immediately after her audition; however, Fox was pushing for someone with more experience and a bombshell persona. Chris Carter pushed for Anderson and held his ground. She was subsequently cast as Special Agent Dan Scully when she was twenty-four years old. The show ended up running for nine seasons rather than the thirteen episodes that Gillian expected. It was one of the most popular TV series on nighttime TV and one of Fox's biggest hits. She won several awards for her role including an Emmy Award, a Golden Globe, and two SAG awards for Best Actress in a Drama Series. She eventually married Clyde Klotz who was the assistant art director of X-Files in 1994. The pair have one daughter together.
