Biography

Mariah Carey was born on March 27, 1970 in Long Island, NY. She is a singer, songwriter, actress and entertainment personality. Her mother was a former Opera singer and a voice coach and her father a aeronautical engineer. She is the youngest of three children in her family. Her parents divorced when Mariah was very young which forced her mother to hold down several jobs to support her family. Mariah loved music from an early age and was singing for audiences at the age of three. She started writing her own songs by the time she was fourteen. She moved to Manhattan, NY after high school and began singing demo tapes, she also held down many odd jobs to pay the bills. She also attended beauty school but never completed it as she landed a job as Brenda Starr's backup singer.

At a party Brenda Starr gave famous record producer Tommy Mottola Mariah's demo tape. Mariah also met Mr. Mottola at the same party. He listened to the demo after Mariah had left the party but was very happy with what he heard. He subsequently tracked her down to sign her to a record contract at Columbia. Her self-titled debut CD, Mariah Carey was released in 1990. She co-wrote all of the songs for the CD. It went right to number one and stayed there for several weeks. It promptly made her a star in the US. Her second CD Emotions was released in 1991. The title track made it to number one but the rest of the CD got poor reviews and did not succeed as well as her first CD.

Her third CD Music Box also went to number one the world over and gained her recognition not only in the US but all over the world. She was now established as a number one singing sensation that was around to stay. She followed Music Box with Merry Christmas, Butterfly, Rainbow, Glitter, Charm Bracelet and The Emancipation of Mimi. It was after multiple singles had entered the top ten spots that she reached Diva status in the US. She collaborated with many popular rap and hip hop artists and became an international phenomenon.

Mariah's personal life was a bit of a turmoil for many years. She caused a stir when she married, much older, music producer Tommy Mottola in 1993. The couple divorced in 1997. She suffered a nervous breakdown from overwork and stress and admitted herself into a psychiatric hospital in July 2001. She came out of her struggles with a much better sense of self and began to again start making public appearances. She has been very involved with charity work and released a line of jewelry and accessories in 2006.
