Biography

Salma Hayek was born on September 2, 1966 in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico. Her father is Lebanese and her mother is Mexican with Spanish roots. She was raised Catholic and studied at Catholic school, at the Academy of the Scared Heart in Louisiana. She loved gymnastics as a young girl and woman. She left the school at the age of twelve due to conflicts with the nuns of that school who claimed she had behavioral problems. She went back to Mexico but was later sent to live with her aunt in Texas until she was seventeen. She again returned to Mexico to attend college, but she dropped out to pursue a career in acting. In 1989 she earned her first lead role in the Mexican soap, Teresa. Later she starred in El Callejon de los Milagors which won extensive awards and made her the top female star in her home country.

She moved to L.A. California in 1991 to extend her acting to an American audience. She studied acting with Robert Rodriguez and Elizabeth Avellan. In 1995 she got her major motion picture break in US films starring in Desperado opposite Antonio Banderas. This earned her the attention of US movie goers and critics alike. In 1999 she starred in Wild Wild West with Will Smith. A film that was very close to her heart and took her years of lobbying to get produced came to fruition in 2002. The film Frida, which she co-produced and starred in, chronicled the life of artist Frida Kahlo. She won a best actress Oscar nomination for her role.

Hayek has charmed American, Mexican and International audiences with her acting ability, sultry, exotic beauty and intelligence. She will be appearing in three movies in 2006 and a voice role as well; fans can look forward to seeing and hearing a lot more of this sexy Mexican lady in the future.
