Biography

Kate Elizabeth Winslet was born on October 5, 1975 in Reading, Berkshire. Both of her parents were actors. Her maternal grandparents, Oliver and Linda Bridges, founded and operated the Reading Repertory, and her uncle, Robert Bridges, appeared in the original West End production of Oliver. She has two sisters who are also actresses. She began studying drama at the age of eleven, and was soon cast as a spokesperson for a cereal in television commercials. Additionally, she co-starred on the BBC children's science-fiction series Dark Season in 1991.

When she was seventeen she made her major motion picture debut in Heavenly Creatures in 1994. She has since starred in several major movie successes the largest of which was the movie Titanic which was the highest grossing picture of the 1990's. She has also starred in the critical successes, Sense and Sensibility, Hamlet, Hideous Kinky, Holy Smoke, Iris, The Life of David Gale, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and her most recent successes, Finding Neverland in 2005 opposite Johnny Depp, and opposite Sean Penn in All the King's Men in 2006.

On January 25, 2005, Winslet was nominated for an Oscar for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind but lost to Hilary Swank for her role in Million Dollar Baby. She is one of the youngest actors to have received four Oscar nominations. Her Titanic nomination secured her the record for the youngest ever double-Oscar-nominee. She was nominated for Sense and Sensibility in 1995, Titanic in 1997, Iris in 2001 and for Eternal Sunshine in 2005.

In her personal life she wed Jim Threapleton in 1998 and divorced the director in 2001. They have one daughter together. She later married Sam Mendes in 2003 they have one son together who was born in December of 2003. She is very outspoken about her voluptuous figure and refuses to lose weight for roles.
